Drishyam 2 is a Malayalam language crime-drama thriller film written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. It is a sequel to Drishyam (2013). The prequel film Drishyam was a critical and commercial success. It is one of the best thriller films ever made in India. It won many accolades and later it was remade into four other Indian languages. So, the expectations from this film were very high. Let’s see where it stands on that scale. If you haven’t watched the first film then you can stop reading here. Because there might be some spoilers from the first film.
The film picks up after the six years of the events of the first film. Now, Georgekutty (Mohanlal), Rani (Meena), Anju (Ansiba), and Anu (Esther Anil) are leading a normal life, trying to forget their dark past. The only strategy Georgekutty applies is not to talk about that horrific event from their past. At the start, all the things seem fine, but, the police, having received humiliation due to their inability to solve the case, decide to reinvestigate it secretly, under the supervision of newly appointed Inspector General Thomas Bastin (Murali Gopy). The rest of the film tells the engaging story of police investigation and Georgekutty’s desperate attempts to save his family again.
First of all, I must say, this film complements its prequel concerning gripping storyline and compelling performances. And, finally, it doesn’t surpass its prequel but it does live up to the audiences’ expectations. It rarely happens that the film can recreate the magic of its prequel. Once again, Jeethu Joseph has written and directed a very much original & wonderful story. The performances are all great, especially, Mohanlal. As all the characters were already developed, the film should have had taken less time in the first half to create the base. But, the film gets too slow and nothing significant happens for a long time. So, you have to bear with the first half of the film. And, in the second half, all the things start accelerating and head towards an incredible climax. It is a riveting watch for its suspense building and keeps the audience engaged right till the end.
Verdict : The film is a really good successor to its previous film concerning performances, story, and its suspense factor. A must-watch for all. Even if you have watched the prequel’s remake from any language, then also you can watch it as there is no difference in the story. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video for streaming.
