Angrezi Medium (2020) – Movie Review

Angrezi Medium is a comedy-drama film directed by Homi Adajania. The film is a spiritual sequel to the Hindi Medium (2017). Both the film stars Irrfan Khan in a lead role.

The film follows Champak Bansal (Irrfan Khan), a loving and single father, and his daughter Tarika Bansal (Radhika Madan). Tarika, who is fascinated with the foreign life from her childhood, urges her father to let her go to London for the higher studies. At first, Champak hesitates out of the fear of losing his daughter but soon gets ready to let Tarika go to pursue her dreams. The rest of the film shows how important dreams are in life? And how far a father goes to complete his daughter’s dreams?

The film also stars Deepak Dobriyal as Gopi Bansal, who is the cousin brother of Champak Bansal. And they are fighting a court case to earn their grandfather’s name ‘Ghasiteram’ to run their confectionary business under that. The film’s biggest plus point is its excellent ensemble cast. In supporting roles, the film has Kiku Sharda as Gajju, Champak’s and Gopi’s mutual friend, who happens to be a travel agent; Pankaj Tripathi as Tony, Dimple Kapadia as Mrs. Kohli, Kareena Kapoor as Naina Kohli, and Ranvir Shorey as Bablu. And, obviously, the performances in the film are just brilliant.

The film has an emotional message in it but it is nicely wrapped in the humorous moments. But, sometimes the film becomes over-emotional. And, I must say, Hindi Medium was much better than this one. Unlike Hindi Medium, this one is not centered around the education system; But it is more about parents’ unconditional love for their children and their sacrifices to make them happy. The film also talks about adulting kids and their feeling of having freedom. And, that’s where I felt that the film is becoming stereotypical. Because it is not the first time that the film is talking about the parent-children relationship.

Verdict : A light family drama with a sprinkle of comedy and brilliant performances. Good to watch with the family in a quarantine time.

Rating : 3.6/5
