Money Heist: Part 4 (2020) – Review

Money Heist (Spanish: La casa de Papel, transl. The House of Paper) is a Spanish television crime drama series created by Alex Pina. Netflix acquired the global streaming rights of this series in late 2017. Netflix released the first part on 20 December 2017, followed by the second part on 6 April 2018. In April 2018, Netflix renewed the series with a significantly increased budget for a total of 16 new episodes. Part 3, with eight episodes, was released on 19 July 2019. And Part 4, also with eight episodes, has been released on 3 April 2020.

The plot of Part 1 & 2 revolves around a group of unique and skilled robbers lead by the Professor (Alvaro Morte), who assaults the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid to carry out the most perfect robbery in the history of Spain and take home 2.4 billion euros. Part 3 sets two to three years after the heist on the Royal Mint of Spain. However, when Europol captures one of their gang members, the Professor picks up an old plan to assault the Bank of Spain. Part 3 & 4 follows the same group of robbers with some new members.

The series not only focuses on the gripping robbery but also explores the emotional complexity of individual characters and their hidden motivations. The narrative is told in a real-time-like fashion and relies on flashbacks, time-jumps. Corrupt and imperial Government vs the Common man – is also one of the main themes of the series. According to the Professor, these robberies are nothing but the symbol of the Resistance. The Italian anti-fascist song “Bella ciao”, also plays multiple times throughout the series.

The previous three parts of the series are brilliant with respect to the content, storytelling, performances, and direction. And, in my opinion, Part 4 also lives up to the expectations bar set by the previous three. The series has a really good blend of moments of humor, tension, and emotions. The series is very good at building the moments of tension, and whenever the tension heightens, the moments of surprise are just waiting for you. The only thing I disliked is that the robbery does not conclude in Part 4. That means, we again need to wait for Part 5 to come out in 2021.

Verdict : If crime-drama and thriller is your favorite genre and that too centered around an ingenious plot of the heist, then this series is for you. In this time of lockdown, this is the best binge-worthy series you can watch.

Rating : 4.2/5
