Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side (2020) – Review

Asur (Demon/Devil in English): Welcome to Your Dark Side is a crime-drama thriller web tv series created by Gaurav Shukla. The series consists of eight episodes and it is available to watch on the Voot online streaming platform.

The series follows Dhananjay Rajput (Arshad Warsi) and Nikhil Nair (Barun Sobti), two forensic officers from the CBI are trying to catch the psychopath serial killer, whose killings are totally random but follows the tangled philosophy deep-seated in religious Indian mythology. The killer is on the loose, and after his every gruesome kill he sends the GPS coordinates to find the body of the victim to the CBI. Now, Dhananjay and Nikhil must identify the pattern in these killings in order to stop the killer.

The series has a very fresh plot and it revolves around a great blend of the deep concept of ancient Indian Mythology and the complex world of forensic science. The topic of Indian mythology and the narration of the series which goes back and forth in timelines – has a resemblance to Netflix’s Sacred Games. The execution of the series is different and gripping. Every episode starts with some link from the past events which are somehow connected to the present-day events in the series; And ends with a cliffhanger. Like any series, at the start, the series takes some time to set up plot and tone, but after that, you just get drawn into it. The ideology and the thought-process of the psycho-killer make the series much more intriguing. The performances by the characters are apt and compelling. But, few characters just felt over the top.

The series has unexplored and some very uncomfortable visuals. The narration-wise and execution-wise, the series is near to perfect but it does have some notable technical flaws. Sometimes, the characters appear anywhere disregarding their geographical location. Despite it, the series maintains the thrill part of it really well and keeps the audience engaged till the end with surprising and unexpected twists and turns.

Verdict : The series has an interesting storyline with compelling characters. The series is perfect for binge-watching in the times of home quarantine.

Rating : 4.2/5
