Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) – Movie Review

Sonic the Hedgehog is an action-adventure comedy film directed by debutant Jeff Fowler. The film is based on the video game franchise published by Sega. Sonic the Hedgehog is the popular character from the game of the same name by Sega.

The film follows Sonic the extraterrestrial Hedgehog (voiced by – Ben Schwartz), who has escaped from his home planet and now living on Earth in a small town named Green Hill. One night, Sonic becomes upset over his loneliness and runs at supersonic speed, which accidentally triggers an electromagnetic pulse causing a power outage in the entire Pacific Northwest. Then the alarmed government enlists the help of Roboticist and scientific genius Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to uncover the source of the outage. Seeing his cover blown, Sonic seeks the help of a local police officer Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) to find and reclaim his lost rings and escape Dr. Robotnik.

When the first trailer of the film was released, everybody was so upset over the character design of Sonic. It was awful. Usually, makers don’t take into account what people say; But in this case, they took their time and actually fixed the character design, which is much much better than the previous one. The lead character has a lot of nostalgia surrounding it, as it is one of the most loved video game characters. And this film does a fine job on the portrayal of Sonic and delivers the genuinely funny and nostalgic fan service moments. The plot is stereotypical and does not have moments of surprise. All the performances in the film are pretty good. Especially, the appreciating character of the film is Dr. Robotnik played by Jim Carrey. It was so gratifying watching Jim Carrey doing Jim Carrey’s thing. He brings such a fun element to this cartoony villain character.

Verdict : It is a family-friendly action-comedy film, where the parents will feel the character and the kids will enjoy it.

Rating : 3.4/5
