Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) – Movie Review

Jumanji: The Next Level is the fantasy adventure comedy film co-written and directed by Jake Kasdan. The film is a sequel to the film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017). And, it is the fourth installment in the Jumanji franchise.

The film sets three years after the events of the previous film, where Spencer (Alex Wolff), Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), Martha (Morgan Turner), and Bethany (Madison Iseman) have gone their separate ways. But makes a plan to meet up in Brantford. Spencer’s obsession with his character in Jumanji makes him restart the game. Soon, Fridge, Martha, and Bethany find out that somehow Spencer has again got stuck in the game, and to help him get out they also join the game. The rules are the same as that of its prequel that they must win the game in order to return to the real world. But with the little twist that their avatars are not the same as they were before.

The prequel of this film has set up a very interesting and enjoyable plot, and this film also tries to keep that fun and momentum throughout. Most of the film is similar to its prequel, what changes are the new dangers, new villains, new adventures, and some new characters along with the old ones. The film has some really cool visual effects and action scenes that can be experienced better with IMAX or 4DX. As the characters are already developed in the first film, this film jumps directly to the adventure part of the film.

The film also stars Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Awkwafina in the important roles. Each character has some weight and has their moments. Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Danny DeVito, and Danny Glover shine in their comic roles, as they always do. In some places, the story feels slow-paced but enjoyable enough to grab the audiences’ attention. Similar to its prequel, Rory McCann as the villain character is just wasted, having zero character development.

Verdict : The film is a good sequel that is worth to watch. And it has some really funny moments.

Rating : 3.4/5
