Laal Kaptaan (2019) – Movie Review

Laal Kaptaan is a period action drama film co-written and directed by Navdeep Singh.

The film sets in the 18th century, where it follows Gossain (Saif Ali Khan), a Naga sadhu turned bounty hunter. Gossain goes on a killing spree in a quest to find his archenemy Rahmat Khan (Manav Vij), who has flown away with his queen and his army after looting the Maratha treasury. Who is Gossain? Why he has turned a bounty hunter? And why he is seeking revenge on Rehmat Khan? – forms the crux of the story.

The plot of the film is very fresh and unique, I mean, at least I haven’t seen this kind of topic ever explored before in Bollywood. The setting of the film in the 18th century is perfect as it takes some real historical incidents and weaves the story around it. The film is engaging and with compelling characters it becomes even more enjoyable. The only thing which may bug the audience is its pacing and indifference in uncovering the plot. The film takes its own time to build up the story and characters, gives them space to develop. But in that process, it becomes pretty predictable, and it fails to create an impact with its final act, which actually had the potential to be more powerful.

The film is very well directed. The visuals and the cinematography is beautiful. The look and feel of the film are so vibrant and colorful. The action sequences and the background score of the film complement its story.

I must appreciate Saif Ali Khan for the kind of roles he is experimenting with than any other Bollywood star. His performance as the Naga sadhu is worth watching, and he totally makes this character alive on screen. On the other hand, Manav Vij fits perfectly as the villain character, his eyes, his body language speaks for him. The film also stars Deepak Dobriyal as the tracker. His character brings fun and energy to the story. This is the third time when Saif Ali Khan and Deepak Dobriyal are working together after Omkara (2006) and Kaalakaandi (2018). There is one more character – a widow acted by Zoya Hussain, who comes across Gossain and plays an important role in the story.

Verdict : The film is worth watching for its fresh content and its performances. The film is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video streaming platform.

Rating : 3.8/5
