Ford v Ferrari (2019) – Movie Review

Ford v Ferrari is the sports biographical drama film directed by James Mangold (who previously directed Logan (2017)) and written by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Jason Keller.

The story of the film follows automotive visionary and American car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and his friend Ken Miles (Christian Bale), a British driver, who together leads the determined and eccentric team of engineers to build the a revolutionary Ford GT40 race car to challenge dominant Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France in 1966. The film is based on a true story. And the plot unfolds in a very subtle manner, which keeps the audience invested, where you can see why the particular character is doing what he’s doing. We can see their intentions and motivations behind each of their actions, which is just satisfying to watch.

The casting of the film is perfect, and so the performances – top-notch. Matt Damon and Christian Bale just make these characters alive on the screen. They both are totally believable as these characters, who are battling corporate interference, challenging the laws of physics and fighting their own demons. In particular, Christian Bale just steals every scene he is in. It will be no surprise if both of them get the nominations for Academy Awards.

Along with the great story and performances, the film also correctly shows the process of building the race car step by step. The film also focuses on the fact that corporate leadership always steals the limelight from the ones who actually did the groundwork and made it possible. Besides the corporate battle between Ford and Ferrari, the film also delivers the rooting and gripping story of Ken Miles, who despite many hurdles, makes to Le Mans race. The film is very well directed, and the racing sequences in the film are just amazing to watch. The background music also compliments the film.

Verdict : The film will evoke the thrill of racing and competitions in the audience with its excellent storytelling and compelling performances. A must watch.
