102 Not Out is a comedy-drama film directed by Umesh Shukla who is well known for his unique storytelling approach in OMG: Oh My God! (2012). The film stars the epic and classic duo Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor in the lead roles.
The film starts with Dattatraya Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan), a lively 102-year-old who lives his life to the fullest. Babu Vakharia (Rishi Kapoor), Dattatraya’s sad and grumpy son (75-year-old), is exactly opposite, who believes that he is now too old to enjoy life and lives a routine life by accepting his old age. One day, Dattatraya comes home and announces his wish to break the oldest-man-alive record. Now to make this happen he needs to be in a healthy environment by keeping a distance from negative minded people. And therefore he decides to send his son Babu to an old age home, which makes Babu sadder as he has been habituated to stay in his home since these many years. Dattatraya agrees not to depart his son Babu to old age home on a condition that Babu has to fulfill certain conditions. The movie revolves around these conditions given to Babu which eventually changes his way of looking at life.
The film is a really good mixture of comedy and drama. In its first half, the film goes in a happy-go-lucky way, and in the second half, it makes the audience feel the emotional gravity of the situations. The film gives away some really impactful messages about life. The chemistry between Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor is a sheer fun to watch, undoubtedly, apart from the story, their performances also make the film special. One more funny character played by Jimit Trivedi as Dhiru adds a cherry on the cake. The film is clear on where it wants to go but the way it chooses to go there sometimes becomes the overdose of emotions. In some situations, emotional stuff is just thrown at the audience, which feels abrupt, but the compact running time makes the film ‘short and sweet’.
Verdict : It’s a Short and Sweet and Unique Father-Son family film to watch.
