Ittefaq (2017)

Ittefaq (Coincidence in English) is the crime mystery thriller film co-written and directed by Abhay Chopra. Despite the fact that it is the debut directorial film by Abhay Chopra, this film is the fine entry in the house of limited mystery thrillers from Bollywood.

The film starts with Vikram (Sidharth Malhotra), a novelist, who is on the run from the crime scene where his wife Katherine is found dead. The same night, while on the run from police Vikram ends up at the apartment of Maya (Sonakshi Sinha), a young homemaker, for seeking a help. Later that night, Maya rushes out of the apartment and spots a police van, the police enter her apartment and find Vikram standing next to the body of Maya’s husband, Shekhar, who’s been murdered. Dev (Akshaye Khanna), a police officer cum detective is investigating this double murder case, interrogates both Vikram and Maya. Now being the only witnesses of that fateful night there are two different narrations by Vikram and Maya of the incident occurred which makes them prime suspects. Being a high profile murder case, with limited time in hand to solve it, Dev is shredded between the covered truths and truthful lies, will he be able to unfold the mystery?

The film has the simple plot but its brilliant narration makes it outstanding and ultimately story never loses the grip. The film is hardly two hours long so there is hardly a dull moment and that’s what makes the story more crispy and it never loses the pace. The performances by Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha justifies the characters. Akshaye Khanna is once again playing the detective cop as he played in this year’s crime thriller film Mom (2017), and in this one also his performance is precise and steals the show every time, a nice comeback year for him. Till the end, the narration is able to get the audience to the edge of their seat, biting their nails. If the small glitches here and there can be overlooked then this is the decent mystery thriller.

Verdict : A decent watch for the crime mystery genre lovers.

Rating : 3/5
